Kilimanjaro is located in the north of Tanzania and is the highest mountain in Africa. The origin of the name Kilimanjaro is unknown however it is believed to be “white mountain”.
Kilimanjaro is
considered to be the tallest freestanding mountain in the world reaching 5,895 m . Kilimanjaro is made
up of 3 distinct volcanic cones. Kibo,Mawenzi and Shira. The mountain
top is covered with snow even though it is only three degrees from the equator.
The first
successful assent to the top of Kilimanjaro was in the year 1889 in the month
of October. The successful climbers were a German called Hans
Meyer, and a scout called Yonas Kinyala Lauwo along with an Austrian Ludwig
Purtscheller. This had been Meyers third attempt his first attempt
was in 1887 were he reached the base of Kibu. The reason for his failure here
was he had not the right equipment to handle the deep snow.
However Meyer was now
more determined than ever to climb the mighty Kilimanjaro and he attempted
again the following year. Alas it was not to be he failed again. But Meyer was
a man with steely determination and in October 1889 he fulfilled his ambition
of conquering Kilimanjaro.
He accredited his
success to the strategy of setting up multiple campsites so that when they
failed with different attempts they did not have to descend too far. This
allowed them to regroup and eventually reached the summit of Kilimanjaro.
We here at Flying
Wings International have been taking people to the top of the great White
Mountain that is Kilimanjaro for years. Kilimanjaro has five common routes. The
most popular routes to conquer the mountain are Lemosho and Machame. The
other three routes are Rongai,Mweka and Marangu.
We here at Flying
wings international believe strongly in your safety and we have
to inform you that climbing the great mountain of Kilimanjaro is easy and
does not require you to have mountaineering experience. The biggest
challenge you will face my friends is the altitude but if you allow time to
acclimatize to the altitude it will make a huge difference to your experience.
Kilimanjaro is not a
mountain that you can attempt to climb on your own there are rules in place to
help the local economy and it is a mandatory requirement to have a licensed
guide with you also you are required to have porters to carry your equipment.
Another amazing fact
about Kilimanjaro is that it is one of the rarest places on earth when one
considers that it includes every ecological life zone on the planet:
- Savannah
- Desert
- Montane forest
- Tropical Jungle
- Sub alpine plants
- Alpine Zone
Now that I have
outlined these interesting points about Kilimanjaro I’m sure you agree with me
when I say what an amazing place this White Mountain is. When we think
that it is the tallest free standing Mountain in the world. Allied with the
fact, that it is one of the few places on earth that possesses every possible
ecosystem on the planet; also keep in mind it does not require mountaineering
experience to climb.
So knowing all these
amazing facts I’m sure that Kilimanjaro is on your bucket list. So why wait,
